Upper Crust is a dairy restaurant in Queens. The Kosher Cactus visited Upper Crust in July of 2021. This review was written in July of 2021. Just so you know, Upper Crust has another location in Cedarhurst which is not the subject of this article.

Where is Upper Crust Located?

Indoor and Outdoor dining is available at Upper Crust Queens

Upper Crust is located at 6711 Main St, in Flushing, Queens. It sits between 68th Ave and Melbourne Avenue, just north of Kew Gardens Hills.

If you are travelling by car, there are plenty of parking spaces in the side streets around Main Street, all within easy walking distance of the restaurant.

You can also take public transportation: The Q20A and Q20B busses both stop almost directly outside the restaurant. Unfortunately, the closest subway is the 7 line, which stops on Main Street, but is about 20 minutes north.

Upper Crust is open from 11AM – 9:30PM, Sundays through Wednesdays, 11AM – 10PM Thursdays, and is closed Fridays and Saturdays.

You can order online for pickup or delivery fromUpper Crust at their website. YOu can also order food for delivery via UberEats, DoorDash or GrubHub.

What is the vibe at Upper Crust?

Upper Crust is smart-casual. You can wear your jeans, but they better be fancy jeans! Only joking 🙂 Seriously, though, the restaurant is slightly upscale, but has a really laid back vibe.

The staff were all friendly and efficient, and the food was really good. As soon as we sat down, the waiters brought us iced water.

The space itself is upscale- beautiful leather and wood chairs, hardwood floors and a modern tile bar. One of the highlights of Upper Crust is the brick oven pizza- and watching it being made from your seat.

You can also eat outside, when the weather is good. The restaurant has sidewalk seating, and can fit up to 20 guests outdoors.

What is the restaurants’ best dish?

Nachos. Oh, my Gd. This dish is world renowned (ok, Kosher-world renowned) and it certainly deserves the space. These Nachos are fully loaded.

They are called Baked Italian Nachos, and they have charred tomato, kalamata olives, hot peppers, mozzarella and parmesan. The entire dish sits in a gorgeous bechamel sauce, adding a rich, cheesy flavour. There is an arrabbiata tomato dip on the side, but I like to drizzle it on top.

The Nacho chips are house-made from lasagna that is cooked, and then fried to crispy, golden perfection. The chips never get soggy. I don’t know how they do it, but somehow, the entire dish is hot and flavorful and crispy until they are completely gone.

I promise you, you will never be able to eat regular nachos again. These will spoil you for life.

What is on the menu?

halloumi cheese pan fried, pecan and pear salald arugula lettuce cherry tomatoes, at Upper Crust
See those oblong fried cubes? That’s Halloumi. And this is a Pecan and Pear Salad.

Here’s what is really great about Upper Crust: although they have an extensive menu, you can (and should!) build your own pizza or pasta or salad from scratch. Here are some of my favorite options of ready-to-order:

ALOHA Pizza. It’s different, but don’t freak out. This pizza has vegan pepperoni. I know, I know, why would you order vegan meat at a dariy restaurant… but this is good. This is really good.

It tastes like Hawaiin cuisine! It’s really good! The pizza also has blackened pineapple, cheddar and caramelized onion. There’s a BBQ drizzle on top. You know what it tastes like? It tastes like Moana. It’s fresh, it’s fun, it’s different.

(If you are stressing about pineapple on pizza, let me tell you that there is a VERY big difference between blackened pineapple on pizza and regular, gross, soggy pineapple on pizza. You are welcome.)

Poke Tuna Bowl. It’s a Poke salad bowl, without the traditional rice. There are mixed greens, red onion, carrot, avocado, edamame and cucumbers. It is topped with a pepper-crusted tuna, onion crunch and nori, and served with a ginger dressing. All the ingredients are the freshest quality, and really delicious.

Blue Fin Tuna Tartar. This is a starter, and a fantastic one. Fresh ahi tuna, served raw (sorry, pregnant people), with avocado, and a lime, ginger, sesame dressing. This dish comes with house-tortilla chips, for scooping. It has a real-world feel, incorporating different flavour palates to make a memorable and incredible dish.

Gnocchi Di Mama, with Creamy Pesto Sauce. In the interest of full disclosure, I must admit that I have never tasted this dish. BUT. The couple at the table next to us did, and it looks incredible. And (I peeked) they finished off the whole dish. So next time, I’m getting one.

Some of the mains come with side dish options. At Upper Crust, I tried to order salads instead of fries. Although the restaurant specialized in many things, fries, unfortunately, is not one of them.

Is Upper Crust kid-friendly?

Yes! As well as plenty of room to navigate a stroller, the restaurant has an entire menu for kids! You can choose from things like Vegan Chicken Fingers, customizable pastas, fries and more.

Truthfully, the pizza dishes and pasta dishes can all be altered to your child (or baby’s) taste.

Upper Crust also has plenty of high chairs available, and a staff that was incredibly accommodating to the 2 babies that were with us.

Is Upper Crust Vegetarian?

Yes, Upper Crust is vegetarian. The restaurant is completely dairy, so no meat at all.

There are also quite a few vegan options- veggie burgers and vegan meat dishes and dishes with vegan cheeses. And almost every dish is customizable, so you can choose vegan proteins over animal-based proteins.

Based on that, you can also order Paelo / Whole-30 approved dishes, keto dishes, or anything else that fits your personal diet.

I’d recommend the Quinoa Mushroom Burger- it has arugula and red onion (always a winning combo), tomato and mozzarella. It comes with a sun-dried tomato aioli, which sounds incredible and looks delicious.

Do they serve drinks?

Upper Crust has plenty of coffee, milkshake and soda options. There are no alcoholic drinks.

If you want a milkshake, get a Cookies and Cream. It has chunks of cookie in it, in addition to the ice cream and milk. It is mouthwatering-ly good.

The coffees are pretty good, too.  A standard latte comes with an option of whipped cream on top. Get the whipped cream, its delicious.

Does the restaurant have dessert options?

Upper Crust has a few dessert options. A few more would go a long way, but the things that they do have are actually pretty good.

The best options are dessert pizzas, of which there are four- but it is pretty heavy, especially if you just ate a real pizza.

Personally, I am a huge fan of carrot cake, and the one at Upper Crust is excellent. It comes with a generous tower of whipped cream on top, and a smooth cream cheese frosting. It pairs beautifully with hot coffee.

What Hashgacha is Upper Crust Queens under?

The restaurant is under the Kosher supervision of the Vaad HaRabbanim of Queens. All food is Pas Yisroel and Chalav Yisroel.

Final Thoughts

Upper Crust was a really great experience that I absolutely intend on repeating. The ambience was fantastic, the food was superb and the staff were helpful and polite. This is a really family-friendly establishment, and every part of our experience there radiated with that feeling.

Our bill for late-lunch was $150- 5 apps and 3 mains, plus a few drinks and dessert. In my opinion, it was money well spent.
